KALAMAZOO (WWJ) - The investigation into an early morning shooting that injured four near Western Michigan University is ongoing.

Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety officers were called to the 2700 block of West Michigan Avenue at around 3:15 a.m. Saturday for reports of gunshots. Once on the scene, officers found a 19-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his heel, along with a grazing wound. He was taken to a local hospital.

A 23-year-old man arrived at a local hospital shortly after with a gunshot wound to the stomach, according to a press release from KDPS. Two other 23-year-old men were treated for gunshot wounds to their feet. A 21-year-old man sustained “minor facial injuries” from debris, but authorities say he was not shot.

All injuries are considered nonfatal.

The preliminary investigation indicated that the shooting appeared to have followed a fight. Detectives said they identified and arrested one suspect on a weapons charge, with more information expected to be released following his arraignment.

Authorities said at this time they don’t believe this was a random act of violence. They also confirmed that none of the victims were associated with nearby colleges or universities.

“This was a reckless act that endangered dozens of people,” KDPS Deputy Chief Matthew Huber said. “Incidents like this have no place in our community, and we will use every resource available to identify those responsible and bring them to justice. Our priority is the safety of our residents, and the community can expect to see an increase in police patrols throughout the area of the shooting.”
