OLIVE TWP. (WWJ) -- There were no injuries, but quite a mess to clean up when a semi truck carrying a hefty load of pinto beans overturned in West Michigan this week.

According to officials with Olive Township Fire Rescue, the crash happened at around 5 a.m. Wednesday, at 120th and Bingham in rural Ottawa County.

"Upon arrival, we found no injuries and proceeded to open the rear of the semi, discovering 40,000 pounds of pinto beans in plastic tote bags," fire officials said, sharing photos from the scene and adding: "It was clear that this would be a prolonged operation."

The fire department thanked nearby Dykhuis Farms for providing a tractor, vacuum, and hoses to assist in transferring the beans to a dump trailer.

"Additionally, thanks to Reliable Road Service for their assistance in removing the semi and hauling away the beans, and to Ottawa County Canteen Services for ensuring everyone remained hydrated and fed throughout the day," Olive Township Fire added.

The crash happened amid a winter storm that made roads snowy and slick across the state. To avoid a spinout, Michigan State Police urge all drivers to reduce speeds and handle curves with care during winter weather.
