ALBION, MICH. (WWJ) A third Michigan college/university is now requiring COVID-19 vaccines for on-campus students.

Albion College, a liberal arts college about 30 miles east of Battle Creek, will require all students, faculty and staff to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 in order to return to campus for the fall 2021 semester.

Dr. Mathew Johnson, the university’s president, made the announcement.

“Our focus has been, and remains, managing the risk associated with COVID-19, and prioritizing the health and safety of our entire campus community to ensure we are able to offer the in-person experience our students know and love,” said Dr. Johnson. “This vaccination requirement is a continuation of that commitment. We are extremely proud of the way our students and entire campus community have responded to our safety protocols, and we’re eager to return to full in-person instruction for the fall semester.”

Prior to coming to campus this fall, students will be required to show proof of vaccination by August 1. The university will accept all three of the currently approved vaccines in the U.S.—Moderna, Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson.

Further details of how to show proof will be announced at a later date.

Medical and religious exemptions will be honored, the university said.

The college of about 1,500 students is planning to hold full in-person classes this fall and return to the standard academic calendar after a module approach this past school year.

Albion did hold modified in-person classes during the pandemic. They also worked with the Calhoun County Health Department this spring to provide vaccines to students, faculty, and staff in seven clinics near campus, amid a phased rollout.

Two other major Michigan universities are also requiring vaccines for on-campus students, with more expected to follow suit.

University of Michigan Ann Arbor and Oakland University will require all students living on campus in residence halls and other university housing to be fully vaccinated.
