WASHTENAW COUNTY (WWJ) - Authorities have safely stopped a driver fleeing from police at very slow speeds in Washtenaw County on Friday.
Just before 1:30 p.m., in the city of Dexter, authorities were seen using a precision immobilization technique or PIT maneuver via the WXYZ-TV helicopter which finally stopped a black Kia Soul that had led police on a chase for almost an hour, for nearly 30 miles.
Prior to the maneuver, a large group of police cars had gathered behind the vehicle that had its wheels blown out as they creeped along Jackson Avenue near Zeeb Road.
The chase originally started around noon in the area of I-94 and I-275 in Wayne County's Van Buren Township before crossing into Washtenaw County, going past Ann Arbor, according to reports.
The vehicle was clocked going more than 100 mph originally, reports say, but the chase has slowed to 5 mph after police deployed a spike strip and the vehicle sustained multiple flat tires.
At some point, the driver dropped off a woman and then kept going. He was also seen throwing things out of the vehicle.
It is unclear what led to the chase and if there is more than one occupant in the vehicle. WWJ is are awaiting more information from police regarding why the chase took place.
There are no reports of any injuries.
