BERKLEY (WWJ) The City of Berkley is banning e-bikes and other modes of transportation on downtown sidewalks.

The City Council voted on Monday, August 17th, to ban e-bikes on sidewalks in the downtown district from 12 Mile and Coolidge to Greenfield Road.

The ban also applies to motorized scooters, skateboards, moped devices, and regular bikes.

“We’re trying to be proactive, we’re trying to change the landscape so, at the end of the day, it begins and ends with safety,” Berkley Mayor Bridget Dean said during the council meeting.

This ban comes amid a growing number of incidents involving e-bikes.

An e-bike crash in Redford last week (Aug. 11) left a 13-year-old boy with a severe head injury and his 15-year-old sister with multiple broken bones. According to authorities, a car struck the teens while they were riding an e-bike in the area of Inkster and Clarita.

Over the weekend, a 20-year-old e-bike rider in Port Huron became partially pinned under a car. He survived with minor injuries, and authorities determined him at fault for failing to stop.

Berkley’s ordinance will go into effect in 30 days.
