BATTLE CREEK (WWJ) -- Sen. Bernie Sanders is coming to Michigan on Friday to attend a rally with the striking Kellogg's workers, according to a news release.
The rally will be on Dec. 17 at 3 p.m. at the Battle Creek Farmer's Market at Festival Market Square, 25 McCamly St. S.
Over 1,300 workers at the company have been on strike for 10 weeks demanding better working conditions and to end the two-tier pay system that gives lower wages to new workers.
According to the news release, during the first months of the pandemic, Kellogg’s employees worked 12-hour shifts for several days in a row, including some who worked 50 and others who worked more than 100 days straight.
The result of this was a 25% increase in annual profit for the company.
However, Kellogg's has responded to the worker's demands by walking away from the bargaining table and hiring permanent replacement workers, instead.
The company even threatened to move 275 jobs to Mexico where Kellogg’s pays new employees just $0.97 an hour, according to the release.
This is all happening while the company brought in huge profits and CEO Steve Callihane pocketed over $11 million in 2020.
