FLINT (WWJ) - Two people are dead in Flint after an apartment complex caught fire early Saturday morning, officials confirmed, ending an exhausting night for crews as they also battled three other blazes overnight.
Battalion Chief Jerry Hunt with the City of Flint Fire Department said via Mlive that the apartment fire occurred at the Midway Square townhomes apartment complex just after 3 a.m. on Saturday after firefighters already knocked down a trio of fires reported a vacant homes in the city.
Hunt explained that other fire departments responded to the apartment complex as Flint fire crews were still at the scene of an earlier fire.
Two people — whose identifies were not release by authorities — were confirmed dead in the blaze, Hunt said.
Firefighters were at the apartment complex for almost three hours and five units were said to have been damaged — three were destroyed as a result of the flames while two others sustained water damage from crews working to suppress the fire.
Hunt said the apartment fire brought a somber close to a busy night for the department. Firefighters received the first call about one of four blazes overnight Friday into Saturday around 8:45 p.m. Friday, Nov. 4.
The fire broke out at a vacant home at 2807 Barth St. on the city's northwest side.
Afterward, Flint fire crews were sent to another vacant home at 708 Asylum St. around 10:45 p.m. Friday. Almost four hours later, the crews were back at the same scene after the home re-ignited around 2:30 a.m. Saturday.
Hunt could not confirm whether the heated remains from the first fire caused the house to burn again or if the fire was intestinally set.
The cause of the fires remain under investigation at this time. Michigan State Police fire investigators along with the City of Flint homicide detectives are investigating into the cause of the deadly apartment fire.
