DETROIT (WWJ) - The burned body of an unidentified man that was found early Saturday morning in Detroit may have been fatally shot prior to being lit on fire, authorities say.
Detroit Police spokesman Cpl. Dan Donakowski told WWJ that the body was discovered by Detroit firefighters who were called out to a fire in the 15300 block of Washburn just before 6 a.m. on April 22.
Fire crews were able to extinguish the fire, which Donakowski described as a burning pile of debris and not a house fire as reported by other media outlets, when the charred body of an adult male was found.
Donakowski said the body appeared to have a gunshot wound.
The man has not yet been identified by police, but homicide detectives are continuing to investigate.
According to the department, the medical examiner will determine the victim's cause of death. Additional details about the case are expected to be released as it becomes available.
