(WWJ) A young Hamtramck man is facing a murder charge, accused in a shooting at an east side Detroit gas station.

Mohammed Hizam, a clerk at the business in the 10070 block of Gratiot Ave., allegedly fired a rifle at 30-year-old Joshua Lewis at around 10:45 p.m. on Oct. 12.

According to the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office, Lewis had just used a hammer to break the glass of a Coin Pusher game of chance machine when Hizam -- who was inside an enclosed portion of the store at the time -- killed him with a single bullet to the chest

Hizam, 18, called 911 after the shooting, waiting for police at the scene and was arrested

The Detroit Police Department submitted a warrant request to the WCPO on Oct. 14, but it was returned to two days later for further investigation because prospectors said several things were missing.

The items needed for a charging decision have been submitted by DPD and the review process is now complete, Prosectuor Kym Worthy said.

Hizam was arraigned in 36th District Court Wednesday afternoon on charges of Second Degree Murder, Manslaughter, and two counts of Felony Firearm.

"We cannot and will not rush to judgment on potential homicide cases. We will review them carefully and thoughtfully," Worthy said. "I want to thank the detectives who worked around the clock with my staff on this case. These dedicated officers kept their heads down, filtered out the outside noise, and got the needed work done. At the appropriate time, we will present the facts to a judge and jury and let justice prevail."

Hizam remains held on a $500,000 cash/surety bond, awaiting his next court appearance scheduled for Nov. 4 before Judge Kenneth King.
