WAYNE COUNTY (WWJ) - A construction crane left behind rubble and questions Thursday after it smacked into the roof of a middle school in the City of Wayne.
A mobile construction crane fell on top of Franklin Middle School, located at 33555 Annapolis Street, near Beaumont Hospital. The school is part of the Wayne-Westland Community School District.
The Wayne Police Department clarified that the crane did not fall on the building, but rather "tilted" into it while lifting items onto the roof.
Photos from the scene show the crane's left side wheels are completely off the ground as the boom lays smashed against the corner of the school's roof.

A pile of rubble scattered on the grass and roof of the building indicates the fall did some amount of damage, though officials said there was only minor damage to the side of the building and roof.
Eric, a resident in the area, tells WWJ's Ryan Marshall he woke around 7:30 a.m. to the sound of the construction crew moving their equipment in.
"And within maybe an hour and 45 minutes, it was tipped over. No sound. Didn't hear anything," he said. "It was probably pretty gingerly because I think it sunk into the ground."
Marshall reports it's possible that heavy rain on Thursday made the ground soft, leading to the weight of the extended crane arm to cause the machine to tip.
Crews were able to get the crane back upright after several hours.
Class is not currently in session and no one was injured in the incident, officials said.
The first day of classes begins for the district on Tuesday, Aug. 29
