Couple charged after malnourished, beaten 4-year-old boy brought to Northern Michigan ER

GAYLORD, Mich. (WWJ) -- A Northern Michigan mother and her boyfriend are facing charges in the shocking abuse of a small child left with internal injuries.

Michigan State Police said the investigation began back on Jan. 2 when the 4-year-old victim was brought to the emergency room at Otsego Memorial Hospital in Gaylord.

An ER doctor called police to report that the little boy was extremely malnourished and had numerous bruises on his body. An ultrasound showed internal bleeding and an internal organ laceration, caused by blunt force trauma, officials said.

The child was flown to Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids.

Following an investigation, the Montmorency Prosecutor’s Office authorized charged against the boy's mom, 30-year-old Nicole Judith Needham of Lewiston, and her boyfriend, 29-year-old Casey James Haskin of Lewiston. Both were arrested and arraigned on Feb. 24 in 88th District Court in Montmorency County.

Haskin is charged with one count of First Degree Child Abuse. His bond was set at $150,000 cash/surety and his next court appearance was scheduled for March 11.

Needham is charged with one count of Fourth Degree Child Abuse. Her bond was set at $25,000 cash/surety and her next court appearance was scheduled for March 18.

There was no updated from police on the boy's condition as charges were announced on Wednesday.
