(WWJ) An investigation is underway after a Dearborn Police Department patrol car was stolen while officers were on the job, early Friday.
In a news release, the police department said officers responded at around 2 a.m. to a business in the area of Outer Drive and Pelham about a large fight that broke out in the parking lot.
While the cops were investigating the incident, someone stole a marked patrol vehicle from the scene.
Officers pursued the stolen car to Beaumont Hospital where it struck a parked, unoccupied security vehicle, police said.
The driver was treated for minor injuries sustained in the crash, and was in custody at the Dearborn Police Department later Friday morning.
The suspect's identity is being withheld pending formal charges from the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office.
Police are now looking into how something like this could happen.
"Clearly, this outcome is not one that is anticipated from a well-trained workforce. It is another reminder that I do not exist in a perfect world," said Dearborn Police Chief Ronald Haddad, in a statement. "An investigation into this matter in its entirety is ongoing."
No additional injuries or arrests were reported.
