READING, Mich. (WWJ) -- A Michigan State Police investigation is underway after an officer-involved shooting in Hillsdale County Wednesday night left a dog and its owner dead.

Authorities say around 7:45 p.m. Wednesday a deputy from the Hillsdale County Sheriff's Office responded to a complaint about a dog at large in the 6500 block of S. Edon in Reading.

When the deputy got to the home, the deputy was immediately attacked and bit by the dog, according to MSP.

The deputy then fired shots at the dog, which left it dead.

That's when the owner of the dog became upset with the deputy outside of the residence and confronted the deputy, armed with a knife.

The deputy fatally shot the suspect, who has been identified as 32-year-old Oscar Herrera. The knife was recovered at the scene.

The deputy's identity has not been released, but authorities say they have more than seven years of law enforcement experience. They were treated at a local hospital for their injuries sustained by the dog's bite.

Detectives from the First District Special Investigation Section are conducting an investigation of the shooting, and the deputy is on administrative leave, per Hillsdale County Sheriff's Office protocol while the investigation is underway.
