DETROIT (WWJ) – Minister Malik Shabazz, one of Detroit's most prominent community activists, is on the road to recovery after suffering a massive heart attack earlier this summer.

Shabazz, founder of the New Black Panther Party/New Marcus Garvey Movement and a co-founder of the Detroit 300, has been in critical condition since the heart attack on June 26.

Shabazz underwent a series of procedures to install a heart pump that will “take over the function of his heart” for the next several years, according to his doctor.

WWJ’s Charlie Langton paid a visit to Shabazz at Henry Ford Hospital on Thursday, where Shabazz said, “I’m doing wonderful.”

“God is good. God is amazing. I love Detroit," Shabazz said in his hospital bed.

Community members gathered in late June outside the hospital to show support to a man who has shown so much support for the city over the years. Shabazz has rallied for many causes over the years, especially focusing on missing people and murder victims.

“He epitomizes, embodies community policing and transparency,” Detroit Police Chief James White said at the vigil in June.
