Detroit (WWJ) -- The night before Halloween -- most commonly known as Devil's Night -- is notorious for arson, and Detroit has seen some of the worst of it.

For decades, the city's abandoned homes were easy targets for arsonists, leading to unfavorable national attention on Detroit.

Eric Jones, Executive Fire Commissioner at the Detroit Fire Department, believes that this problem has passed following a "true community effort" in the city -- but that doesn't mean Detroiters shouldn't remain vigilant on Oct. 30.

Jones tells WWJ there is always a job to do, and will be ready for anything while members of the arson task force, Detroit police, and the bureau of alcohol, tobacco, firearms and explosives will be patrolling during Halloween weekend.

Along with increased patrolling, demolitions of vacant dwellings continue to increase and arsonists are being arrested.

Still, Jones reassures that children in the city can come out and go trick-or-treating this weekend.

"I'm so thankful that we're able to give the holiday back to the children where it belongs," said Jones.
