Roads and freeways underwater — again — as heavy rain falls on metro Detroit

"People slamming on the brakes, cars swerving, water flying..."

(WWJ) Flooding is a problem, once again, on Detroit-area surface streets and freeways, under a fresh deluge.

It was a tough AM drive for many commuters in metro Detroit on Wednesday, following heavy rain overnight.

Trouble spots include E. McNichols west of I-75, as well as M-8/the Davison Freeway, where several lanes were flooded between I-75 and M-10.

"There's nothing dry out here, I can assure you of that," WWJ's Mike Campbell reported from along the Davison, just before the Lodge Freeway interchange. "So this is coming down off of Woodward, and it actually enters after you get underneath the Second Avenue overpass. But right at the bottom of that ramp, it is flooded out."

"What you have is a convergence on top of this flooded water... People slamming on the brakes, cars swerving, water flying. One rear-end job already being attended to by a State Police trooper, and a lot of other near misses right here."

Wednesday morning, the WWJ Traffic Center reported that water and a crash had all lanes blocked on I-94 eastbound after Chalmers. Overnight, there was flooding on I-96 near M-8 in Detroit.

Later in the afternoon, Michigan State Police said there were reports of water covering the right lanes of I-94 near the Lodge. "Use caution in the area," police said.

Hayes Road, between Utica Road and Clinton River Road, was also closed due to flooding.

Speaking live on WWJ Newsradio 950, MDOT spokesperson Diane Cross said, it actually hasn't been as bad as we've seen in the past couple of months.

Cross said the system has held up pretty well.

"We have been very fortunate in the sense of the freeways, and that's what I can speak to, is the state roads that are the I, M and US; a majority of those being freeways and the main drags, like Telegraph, Michigan, that type of thing," Cross said.

"We do have a couple of spots...westbound on the Davison, M-8, at Woodward, we've got some flooding there. And northbound of the Lodge, between I-94 and the Davison, we've got a couple of lanes that have some water on it.

Cross said she believes what has helped this time around is that the rain fell more slowly, so that the ground and the drains have been able to absorb it at a pace that could handle.

The bad news is, it's far from over; with rain expected to continue falling in metro Detroit — all day Wednesday, through the night and into Thursday morning.

A flood watch has been posted in Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties.
