(WWJ) An Oakland County jury has found a Detroit man involved in a deadly road rage shooting last summer guilty on lesser charges.
Terell Josey, 28, was charged with open murder for shooting and killing Detroit Fire Department Lieutenant Francis "Frank" Drombowski at a Troy gas station.
The open murder charge gave jurors in Oakland County Circuit Court several options to consider — including first degree murder, second degree murder and manslaughter.
Court documents show the jury on Wednesday convicted Josey of voluntary manslaughter, as well as gun charges.
The shooting happened the night of July 5, 2021, at the Shell gas station on Rochester Road at Wattles.
Officials said Drombowski, 55, had left his home in Rochester Hills when he was involved in a road rage incident with a couple in a white Jeep Cherokee in the area of Rochester Road and South Blvd.
Gas station security video showed Josey, who was a passenger in the Jeep, and Dombrowski get out of their vehicles and confront each other before Josey shot Dombrowski three times in the upper torso.
Josey fled the scene but later turned himself in to police.
His then-fiancée, Kiara Fuller, who was driving the Jeep, testified at trial about what led to the incident, stating that she'd narrowly avoiding a crash with Dombrowski when Dombrowski ran a red light and turned in front of her.
Josey's attorney argued that he was the victim in this incident, and that he shot Dombrowski in self defense when Dombrowski attacked him.
Dombrowski was an active member and senior lieutenant with the Detroit Fire Department.
Following the shooting, Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan called Dombrowski's death "a tragic loss," adding, "He will be missed terribly."
The Michigan State Police Second District stated in a tweet: "He spent 29 years serving his community, running towards danger, only to lose his life to senseless gun violence..."
Sentencing for Josey is set for Sept. 19.
