DETROIT (WWJ) — If it is true that there "ain't no party like a Detroit party," then the Detroit Sandwich Party is certain to be a banger.

WWJ’s Zach Clark sat down with Detroit Sandwich Party founder Carlos Parisi over tortas at El Parian in Southwest Detroit to talk about the first annual event, held noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 1 inside Eastern Market’s Shed 5.

Parisi, a local chef and owner of Aunt Nee’s salsa, said the one-day festival will feature more than 25 sandwiches from the area’s hottest restaurants.

“This is just kind of reading as the who’s who, the murderers row of crazy sandwiches,” Parisi said.

While the festival, taking place at the famed Eastern Market, will feature local, national and international flavors, Parisi tells WWJ that the festival is about celebrating the Detroit food community.

“At the end of the day, I am just happy to have been part of this community for as long as I have and I’d love to just continue to be a part of it and continue to support each other,” he said.

The new one-day festival was born out of another tradition Parisi helped start — Detroit Sandwich Week every December.

The party goes beyond sandwiches, too. The event will be family friendly with activities for all. And for the adults, there will be a full bar featuring local beer, wine and spirits.

VIP packages for early entry are available on the Detroit Sandwich Party website.
