Domestic dispute that led to standoff with SWAT team in Rochester Hills ends in suicide

ROCHESTER HILLS (WWJ) -- A domestic dispute that turned into a standoff between police and a barricaded gunman in Oakland County ended in suicide.

The Oakland County Sheriff’s Department and SWAT team arrived at the Rochester Hills home on Wimberly Drive at Mead Road on Wednesday evening after receiving a call about a family disturbance where a man was threatening to harm himself, according to Fox2Detroit.

WWJ's Mike Campbell reported that members of the SWAT team entered the home at one point and were going from room to room searching for the man.

Police had secured the area around 7:30 a.m. on Thursday, and the SWAT unit began to move out, though other police officers remained on the scene.

News later broke that the 39-year-old man had taken his own life inside the home.

Upon arrival, deputies spoke with the man's wife, who told them that she had been assaulted and her husband was alone in the house with access to several firearms.

Deputies made contact with the suspect over the phone and he initially agreed to come outside. Officials then heard what sounded like a single gunshot coming from within the residence, and they lost contact with the suspect.

A neighbor told WWJ that this isn’t the first time that particular house has experienced a disturbance.

“I know that they’ve had several domestic disturbances over the past several years, we’ve been here for six or seven years,” she said.

However, the neighbor added that nothing this extreme has ever occurred in the past.

The wife of the suspect and several children made it safely out of the house when the incident began, and no other serious injuries were reported.
