DETROIT (WWJ) -- The woman accused of stabbing her boss to death at an Eastpointe McDonald's on Thursday has been charged with first-degree murder and carrying a dangerous weapon.
Afeni Muhammad, 26, was arraigned Friday afternoon in 38th District Court.
Authorities say she was sent home from work, returned to the restaurant with a kitchen knife and killed her manager, identified as Jennifer Harris, a 39-year-old mother of six.
Police said Muhammad confessed to the stabbing.
"Muhammad admitted that she intended to kill Harris, and stated that after she was sent home she drove to a nearby park, decided to come back and stab Harris with a knife that she had inside her vehicle," said Eastpointe Police Lt. Alex Holish, speaking in court.
"When Muhammad returned to stab Harris, she entered the back entrance with a hooded mask over her face in an attempt to conceal her identity, and attempted to flee the scene after the stabbing, but we stopped by an armed customer."
Macomb County Assistant Sian Hengeveld argued against bond, asking the judge to consider whether Muhammad is a threat to the community.
"She entered a public building with other individuals, other employees, that were present. She produced a weapon a knife, longer than three inches, and she stabbed the victim multiple times; up to possibly as many as 15 times," Hengeveld said.
Harris, who suffered multiple stab wounds to her face, was rushed to a local hospital where she died.
Muhammad's bond was set at $25 million cash/surety bond.
If bond is posted, Muhammad must wear a steel cuff tether, report daily to community corrections, no drug or alcohol use with testing, no contact with any of the victim’s family, and cannot return to McDonald’s.
WWJ Newsradio 950's Charlie Langton reports there appears to have been an ongoing dispute between the suspect and the victim.
"Interestingly, the suspect allegedly posted on her social media that Harris was bullying her, had disrespected her, and had sent her home early a couple of times before," Langton said.
In videos posted to Instagram, Muhammad said Harris accused her of "always snapping at people," which she denied, insisting: "I tell her, no. I make peace; that's what I'm doing. I've been creating peace."
Muhammad added, "So, all that negative energy that she's bringing in there and trying to manipulate it, no. That's gonna stop."
Muhammad remains held in the Macomb County Jail. A probable cause conference for Muhammad is set for Wednesday, July 23, 2025 before Judge Galen, to be followed by a preliminary exam set for July 30.
