FERNDALE (WWJ) -- The case against a Ferndale man who allegedly kidnapped and tortured a high school girl has come to an end after he was found dead in jail.
Officials with the Oakland County Sheriff's Office confirmed to WWJ Newsradio 950's Sandra McNeill that Khalil Floyd, 44, was found hanged in his cell on Wednesday.
All evidence points to a suicide and there isn't suspicion of foul play, said OCSO spokesman Stephen Huber.
Floyd was facing 18 felony counts in connection to the crime, including eight with the possibility of life in prison. Those counts include felony firearm, armed robbery, torture, unlawful imprisonment and multiple counts of criminal sexual conduct in the first degree.
Floyd and his girlfriend, 44-year-old Jessica Quick, were accused of kidnapping a 16-year-old Ferndale high school student while she was putting gas in her car between classes on the northeast corner of Pinecrest and 8 Mile in Oak Park on Nov. 17.
While at the gas station; the suspect approached the victim with a gun and forced her into her own car, according to investigators. Investigators said the suspects took her to a shed behind a nearby home, tied her up, and Floyd sexually assaulted her.
During that time, Quick attempted to return the car to the gas station. A short while later, a friend noticed the girl was missing. The friend contacted the girl's mother, who managed to track down her daughter’s phone…which led her to Floyd and Quick, police said.
“There was a situation where the mother tracked down the daughter’s vehicle and when she found the vehicle, the defendant and the codefendant were in the vehicle,” Dare said during the arraignment. “The defendant got out of the vehicle, pointed a gun at the mother, stole items from her. At the same time, he also told her if anything happens, he would kill her.”
Ferndale Police, with the assistance of the FBI Oakland County Gangs and Violent Crimes Task Force, recovered the girl that same day.
Quick is currently facing charges of kidnapping and unlawful imprisonment.
