DETROIT (WWJ) — Detroit's newest high rise is nearing the finish line.
The exterior façade on the Hudson's Detroit tower is now complete as the final glass panel was installed on the 47th floor of the skyscraper, giving it a total of 4,677 panels.
Last fall crews began placing those panels at the top of the tower, several months after the final steel beam was laid into place.
The panels range from 11 to 16 feet tall and each weigh more than a ton. Officials with Bedrock said work crews spent about 100,000 total hours installing all of the panels.
Work now continues on the inside of the 1.5 million-square-foot mixed-use development that is set to house the 5-Star Detroit EDITION hotel and luxury apartments known as the Residences at The Detroit EDITION.
Developed by billionaire Dan Gilbert’s real estate firm Bedrock, the project features the 49-story skyscraper, next to a shorter “office block,” with the two separated by an outdoor plaza, “creating a central destination for Detroit,” according to Bedrock.
In total, there will be an estimated 1.5 million square feet of space with a mix of office space, dining and retail, event space, more than 200 hotel rooms, and up to 100 residential units.
Hudson’s Detroit will also be the new home to the world headquarters of General Motors.
