
ROMULUS (WWJ) -- Departures to Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County were grounded Wednesday afternoon, with a winter storm impacting the area.
The FAA has issued what's called a "ground stop" with heavy snow reported near the airport in Romulus.
The reason for the ground stop — when went into effect at 1:46 p.m. — was listed as "Weather / Snow - Ice." No time has been given for when it will be lifted.
WWJ's Jonathan Carlson reported this situation came amid mounting flight delays and cancelations at the airport, due to the weather.
Earlier in the day, Flightaware said DTW was experiencing departure delays of an average of 30 minutes, "and increasing." An earlier ground stop was issued until 12:45 p.m., and then briefly lifted.
All travelers scheduled to fly out of or into DTW on Wednesday or Thursday should should check with their airline for updates.
Ten counties in the area — including Shiawassee, Genesee, Lapeer, Livingston, Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, Washtenaw, Huron, Sanilac and St. Clair Counties —are under a Winter Storm Warning through the late evening hours Wednesday.
Much of the Metro Detroit area is expect to see six to eight inches of snow accumulation with this storm.
