GRAND RAPIDS (WWJ) -- A man is hospitalized after he was shot by two police officers in Grand Rapids.

Michigan State Police are investigating the shooting that happened shortly before 2 a.m. Thursday, in the 3000 block of Forrester Street SE.

Grand Rapids Police Chief Eric Winstrom said 911 calls came in about someone who was seen breaking into vehicles in the neighborhood.

"Officers responded; they saw a man in the area next to where one of the neighbors had said their car had been broken into," Winstrom told reporters at a news conference.

"The officers told the man to stop, he ran, they chased him for a very short period at which point in time he pointed a gun at one of the officers. Both officers fired at the man, and he was placed into custody."

The chief said the suspect an adult male, was taken to a hospital where he was listed in serious condition.

MSP has since taken over the investigation as it does with any GRPD officer-involved shooting.

The officers who shot the man have been placed on administrative leave while the incident is under investigation, a common protocol for police departments.
