(WWJ) — Metro Detroiters woke up Thursday morning to a fresh batch of snow on the ground, along with bitterly cold temperatures and treacherous driving conditions.

Eastpointe saw the most snowfall in the area, with the NWS reporting four inches after a storm swept across Michigan Wednesday and into Thursday morning.

Pinckney, in Livingston County, had three inches on the ground, while the NWS was reporting two and a half inches in Farmington.

Other areas like Berkley, Livonia, Howell and Wyandotte all had about an inch and a half, according to the NWS.

The NWS says the snow will be blowing throughout the day, with winds of 30-40 mph. That strong wind will make already-cold temperatures feel even colder. Thursday’s high temps are forecast to be in the low 20s, with the AccuWeather RealFeel temps dipping into the single digits.

Officials say that will keep roads slick for a longer period of time. Macomb County Roads Department Director Bryan Santo told WWJ Newsradio 950 they have added material to the salt to make it more effective in the cold.

“With that additive and with re-running routes and just continuing with the trucks out on the roadways trying to battle this, that’s the best we have to deal with the low temperatures and the blowing wind out there,” Santo said.

Michigan State Police First Lt. Mike Shaw says there were 86 reported crashes in Macomb, Oakland, and Wayne counties -- including one that involved State Police patrol cars.

Meanwhile, other places across the state saw heavier snowfall totals, with Kentwood, a suburb of Grand Rapids, getting 7.2 inches, according to the NWS. Some areas near Kalamazoo saw more than five inches.

Further north, the NWS says Boyne City had 14 inches on the ground Thursday morning and Elmira — just west of Gaylord — had 17 inches.

And that may just be the beginning. The NWS is tracking 3-to-16 more inches of snow across Northern Michigan and the UP between Thursday afternoon and Friday morning.
