(WWJ) An Inkster woman was able to escape, apparently unharmed, before her house exploded in Inkster on Tuesday.
Emergency crews remained on the scene through the afternoon, in the 4100 block of Hickory Street, in the area of Annapolis and Inkster roads.
WWJ's Jon Hewett reported that the initial 911 call came in at around 1:30 p.m. When first responders arrived, the house was fully engulfed in flames.
Authorities said the only person in the home, described as an older woman, was able to make it out alive.
She was checked out by EMS and appeared to be OK, officials said, but she was taken to a local hospital as a precaution.
The fire was out before 2:30 p.m., and there is no danger to the public in the area at this time.
What caused the explosion is still under investigation.
One neighbor told Hewett that she smelled gas before the explosion.
"We're assuming it was gas," Fire Chief Chuck Hubbard said. "It was an explosion; there's no doubt there. But we've still gotta check into it."
A DTE Energy crew responded to the scene, along with fire officials and police.
Hubbard said if you believe you smell gas in or around your home, your should call the gas company.
