IMLAY CITY (WWJ) – An investigation is underway after a jogger was hit and killed by a pickup truck driven by a man who experienced a medical emergency Wednesday afternoon in Imlay City.

The man in his 70s was driving his truck southbound on Almont Street near Third Street around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday when he lost consciousness, according to the Imlay City Police Department.

When he passed out, his wife grabbed the steering wheel from the passenger seat and tried to bring the truck to a stop, officials said.

The truck continued for about 80 yards and veered right towards a vacant building at 150 Almont. It hit a jogger who was running south before clipping the corner of the building and coming to rest, officials said.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends in this tragic incident,” officials said in a press release.

Authorities are withholding the names and hometowns of those involved, as the investigation is still ongoing. Officials didn’t release the age of the jogger.

The driver's condition was not disclosed and it was not clear if his wife was injured in the crash.

Imlay City police officers responded to the crash and then requested the assistance of the Lapeer County Sheriff's Office Crash Investigation Team.
