VP Kamala Harris to discuss vaccination rates, voting rights during Detroit visit Monday

DETROIT (WWJ) Vice President Kamala Harris is on her way to Detroit today, after storms and flooding dashed her plans to visit last month.

Harris is expected to take part in a voting rights listening session at the TCF Center this afternoon.

She's also expected to discuss vaccination rates in metro Detroit at the event, which is set for 2:00 p.m.

Later, at the same venue, Harris will speak at a Whitmer for Michigan fundraiser.

The VP's trip had been scheduled for two weeks ago, but was postponed when parts of Detroit were hit by more than seven inches of rain, causing what officials have called a "500-year flooding event."

The earlier trip was supposed to be part of "We Can Do This" tour, part of a national COVID-19 Public Education Campaign to increase confidence in COVID-19 vaccines.

Along with vaccinations, local and state leaders are expected to talk with Harris about federal aid to help with flood damage.

Last week, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer sent a letter to U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, requesting a disaster designation for Michigan counties impacted by severe weather in recent weeks. The governor declared a state of emergency in Wayne County on June 26 following the rains, and has now added Washtenaw, Huron and Ionia Counties to the emergency declaration list.

Harris's visit follows last weekend's stop by President Joe Biden in northern Michigan, where he touring an orchard, speaking with workers along Whitmer, Senator Gary Peters and Senator Debbie Stabenow.
