(WWJ) There was a lot of smoke over southbound I-75 near I-696 Monday morning, after a fire broke out at construction site.
Captain Chris Kenny of the Hazel Park Fire Department said members of a work crew on I-75 were welding when part of a bridge suddenly ignited.
"When they were welding, heated up the forms and there's a rubber membrane at the bottom that heated up, caught on fire," Kenny told WWJ's Charlie Langton. "Then all the wooden forms are dipped in oil so the concrete doesn't stick to it."
Drivers — some calling in to report flames on the freeway — were urged to use caution as they moved through the area late in the morning, as the first burned and smoke billowed.
Kenny said, however, it only took about half-an-hour to put out the blaze, with help from the Madison Heights Fire Department.
There were no injuries reported.
