State Police investigate bomb threat that shut down Mackinac Bridge

(WWJ) Michigan State Police reopened the Mackinac Bridge over the weekend after it was closed completely due to a bomb threat.

While no bomb was found, an investigation into the situation is now underway.

Authorities closed the bridge for more than two hours after the threat was called in to the Chippewa County Central Dispatch Center around 2:30 p.m. on Sunday.

The caller said they planted a bomb underneath the bridge at the south end, and they were in a car at a nearby gas station. No car was located by authorities.

After an extensive search, the all-clear was given around 5:00 p.m. Police say they aren’t sure if the caller was ever in the area.

A video on Twitter shows traffic backed up for miles at the bridge on Sunday following the shut down.

"All clear on Mackinac Bridge," The Mackinac Bridge later tweeted from its official Twitter account. "Please drive with care. Have a safe and pleasant trip!"

The bomb threat was similar to a situation that happened in Harbor Springs earlier this year.

This is a developing story. Keep it tuned to WWJ Newsradio 950 on air, online and on the Audacy app for the latest information as it becomes available.
