Macomb County police chase ends with arrest of 2 people in drug cartel, seizure of $350K worth of narcotics [VIDEO]

STERLING HEIGHTS (WWJ) -- A police pursuit in Macomb County ends with the arrest of two people involved in a drug cartel and the seizure of $350,000 worth of narcotics.

At approximately 5:50 p.m. on Friday, April 8, Sterling Heights police officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a BMW with tinted windows traveling northbound on Van Dyke Avenue near 14 Mile Road.

However, the vehicle fled into a nearby subdivision, where officers pursued the car to a dead end.

The driver stopped, exited the vehicle and then fled on foot. After a short pursuit, the male suspect was apprehended.

Upon further investigation, police said they discovered hidden compartments within the car that contained 20,000 fentanyl pills -- disguised as OxyContin prescription medication.

Officer also found 500 grams of powder fentanyl.

"The amount of fentanyl that was confiscated could have led to the overdose and deaths of thousands of people in Michigan," said Sterling Heights PD.

Authorities stated that the total street value for the narcotics was over $350,000.

A man and woman were both arrested and are awaiting felony charges.

Both of them admitted to being in the United States illegally from Mexico, adding that they were transporting the narcotics for a drug cartel.
