MOUNT CLEMENS (WWJ) -- The suspect in a pair of random stabbings in Macomb County was charged with first-degree murder Friday, after an eventful arrest Wednesday, during which the agitated man allegedly bit at his wrists, then stole a knife from a cop and cut himself.

Shane Burns, 31, of Washington Twp, was arraigned and charged with eight felony counts in connection with two violent stabbings in Roseville and St. Clair Shores Wednesday morning.

After initially stabbing a woman and slitting her throat in the parking lot of a Belle Tire on Gratiot, the suspect drove to the area of 12 Mile and Harper Ave, where he approached a man at a bus stop and attacked. This second victim struggled with Burns, who allegedly stabbed the man in the midsection several times before returning to his car and fleeing the scene.

Authorities put out an alert, and Warren PD's Special Ops Unit took Burns into custody near Van Dyke and Stephens.

Upon arriving at the Roseville Police Department, police say Burns began "biting at his wrists." An officer ordered him to stop, and a struggle ensued. During the altercation, Burns was able to grab a knife off of the cop and used it to cut his own wrist.

Burns now faces eight felony charges, including several that stem from a search of his vehicle, where police found a shotgun, a 9mm firearm and a large amount of ammunition.

In addition to five weapons charges, the defendant also stands accused of first-degree murder, assault with intent to kill and disarming a police officer.

If convicted of premediated murder, Burns would spend life in prison without parole.

Burns was arraigned in Roseville District Court in front of visiting Judge William Crouchman, who set bond at $10 million. A probable cause hearing is scheduled for May 31, with a preliminary exam the following week.

Macomb County Prosecutor Pete Lucido spoke at a press conference following the arraignment. He thanked Roseville and St. Clair Shores Police Departments, the Warren Police Department along with their Special Ops Unit, and the Macomb County Sheriff's Office and Macomb Auto Theft Squad for identifying and apprehending Burns.

"My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families at this time," Lucido said. "I can assure you justice will be served in this gruesome and horrific crime."
