CANTON TWP. (WWJ) -- A 23-year-old man is facing manslaughter and other criminal charges stemming from an accidental shooting that killed his teenage sister in Canton.
Jay-Veon McKinney of Detroit is accused of mishandling of a loaded firearm in their home at the Ridgeline at Canton Apartments, in the area of Joy Rd. and Honeytree, on Tuesday.
The Canton Police Department said its investigation revealed evidence that McKinney was "carelessly playing with two handguns," in the presence of his two younger sisters, both minors.
He allegedly shot the one of the guns by mistake, hitting his 13-year-old sister, who died at the scene.
McKinney has been charged with Involuntary Manslaughter, Felony Firearm, and Careless Discharge Causing Death.
“The alleged actions of the defendant were dangerous and criminal," aid Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy, in a news release Friday. "Overwhelmingly, most people do not want their loved ones to lose their lives. Their actions can make that a reality. We will keep pushing this message because this child’s death was completely preventable."
In a statement, Canton Deputy Police Chief Joseph Bialy said this case stands as an example of the danger posed by firearms.
“The Canton Police Department, along with the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office, is committed to pursuing justice for this young victim. This tragedy is a stark reminder of the devastating impact guns can have in our community, especially when they claim the life of a child,” Bialy said.
McKinney’s bond was set at $500,000. If he is released on bond, he is to be confined to his home on a tether, and was ordered not to posses any guns.
His next scheduled court dare is April 14.
