PONTIAC (WWJ) We’re getting our first look at a Swartz Creek man accused of absconding with a vegetable truck from the Oakland County Farmers Market in Waterford Township.
Carl Newnham, 55, was arraigned on Saturday on the charge of unlawfully driving away with a vehicle.
The vehicle owner; a Pontiac man, 65; told deputies he had left his truck in the parking lot of the Farmer’s Market on Pontiac Lake Rd. last Wednesday, while delivering produce to the market. His truck was unlocked, and the keys in the ignition, the sheriff’s office said.
The owner said: while chatting with another vendor, he saw his semi-truck and trailer pulling out of the lot.
He followed his truck and told deputies of its location. Deputies caught up with the suspect on Walton and Perry Street. They took Newnham into custody, and he declined to speak to investigators; the sheriff’s office said.
He has a prior arrest in Flint for assault, according to the sheriff’s office.
He is due back in court for a probable cause hearing on August 26. Eight years ago, a probate judge in Genesee County issued a still effective order finding Newnham “an incapacitated individual…who was mentally ill and totally unable to take care of himself.”
