WARREN (WWJ) A fire at a Warren apartment complex left a man with severe burn injuries, fire officials said.

The Warren Fire Department said the flames broke out in a second-floor unit of a four-unit complex on Republic Avenue, in the area of Nine Mile and Hoover, on Saturday, January 25th, around 7:26 p.m.

Firefighters encountered "heavy smoke and flames concentrated in the kitchen area", and rescued a man who is about 40 years old. At the same time, they began the process of extinguishing the fire.

They completed knockdown of the flames (suppressing the flames to the point where they are no longer active or visible) by 7:38 p.m., and extinguished the fire in its entirety within half an hour of their arrival; fire officials said in a press release.

The man suffered "severe burn injuries to a significant portion of his body," according to fire officials.

Fire department paramedics transferred him to a waiting stretcher, and then rushed him to Detroit Receiving Hospital. His condition was not released.

Fire officials said the three other units were damaged by smoke and water. No other injuries were reported. The cause and the origin of the fire remains under investigation.
