(WWJ) There are new developments in the case of a man hit and killed along I-94 in Washtenaw County over Memorial Day Weekend.

Michigan State Police say they got tip on June 6 from someone saying they believe a family friend was involved in the fatal hit and run along I-94 near US-12 in Ypsilanti on May 25.

The caller said the man confided in him that he was involved in a crash in that area on that date and did hit something. Troopers tracked down and interviewed the person, a 20-year-old Jackson man.

The man said he didn't stop at the scene of the crash because he had been drinking and was underage. His car, a 2018 Chevy Malibu, showed damage and was impounded for further forensic investigation.

The man was released from police custody. The investigation is ongoing. Once the investigation is complete, a complaint requesting formal charges will be sent to the Washtenaw County Prosecutor's Office for review.

On May 25, police said calls came in at around 2:30 a.m. from witnesses who said they saw a man who was not wearing any clothing walking on the freeway.

Troopers and medics made their way to the area, but the man — identified as a 52-year-old Warren resident — had already been hit by a black sedan that did not stop. He died at the scene.

Troopers were assisted by the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office, Ypsilanti City Fire Department and Huron Valley Ambulance.
