DETROIT (WWJ) -- Police are searching for a person of interest in the shooting death of a mother of two in Detroit.

According to investigators, the 40-year-old woman was gunned down outside her house at 16900 Carlisle, near 8 Mile and Kelly Roads on the city's east side, at around 9 a.m. Wednesday.

Detroit Police Commander Michael McGinnis said the victim had just returned home after dropping her 11 and 15-year-old children off at school.

"She pulled in her driveway and exited her vehicle and was about to enter her home when the assailant came from, basically lying in wait... and armed with a semiautomatic fired multiple shots, killing our victim," McGinnis said.

Detroit Police Chief James White said the person of interest is 45-year-old David Ariel Hammond, who'd been dating the victim for several months.

At a news conference Wednesday afternoon, White asked for tips from the public to find Hammond.

He said Hammond should be considered armed and dangerous.

"We're going to do everything possible. We're going to utilize every resource that we have, every asset that we have — our partnerships, our technology — in relentless pursuit of this suspect to bring him to justice."

"If he's watching, the pursuit is not going to stop," the chief added. "He needs to turn himself in immediately."
