DETROIT (WWJ) – Millions around the world are mourning after Queen Elizabeth II died at the age of 96 on Thursday.
Metro Detroiters are reacting to the news, including Allison Schwartz, who immigrated to the area from London.
Schwartz told WWJ Newsradio 950 this is a very sad day for people in the UK and across the world who loved The Queen.
"I do feel very British today," she told WWJ's Sandra McNeill.
Schwartz said she was shocked to hear the news seemingly come out of nowhere.
“The whole day I’ve been glued to the TV, just feeling so sad. I saw the image of her meeting the new British Prime Minister a couple of days ago and she looked frail, but she looked okay,” Schwartz said.
Another Metro Detroiter from the UK, WDIV’s Tim Pamplin, joined WWJ live Thursday afternoon and said the sadness reaches beyond the UK.
“She’s not just the Queen of England or the Queen of Great Britain, she’s the queen of so many places on the planet – the commonwealths and the territories,” he said.
Pamplin said the country will be in a period of mourning, but will also celebrate her life.
WWJ’s Ryan Marshall got reaction from international travelers arriving at Detroit Metro Airport, including Julia from Frankfurt, Germany, who said it “came like a shock.”
“She was a great lady. Very eloquent, very nice, very calm. I think people liked her,” she said.
