LANSING (WWJ) -- Special elections have been set in Michigan to fill vacant seats left open when two state Representatives won mayoral races.

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer on Wednesday sent a letter to Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson calling for primary elections for the 13th and 25th Districts to be held on January 30, 2024, with the general elections on April 16, 2024.

Lori Stone became mayor of the City of Warren, and Kevin Coleman is the new mayor in Westland.

Until the new representatives are elected, there is a 54-54 tie in the State House; although Representatives ended their session last week.

"The Michigan Legislature had one of the most productive sessions in Michigan history thanks to Michiganders who elected leaders, like state representatives Coleman and Stone, to get things done on the issues that make a real difference in people's lives," said Whitmer, in a statement. "As we look ahead to 2024, these special elections will ensure that Michiganders in the 13th and 25th districts have representation in Lansing working for them as soon as possible. I look forward to working with the next representatives from these districts when voters elect them in the new year."

Candidates have until November 27, 2023, to file paperwork to get their name on the ballots.
