(WWJ) -- For the first time in Michigan's history, deaths outpaced births in 2020 -- which could mean fewer resources for the state as well as less representation in Congress.
According to the Detroit Free Press and Kurt Metzger from Data Driven Detroit, during the first year of the pandemic 104,000 babies were born, but there were a little more than 117,000 deaths -- an overall population loss of nearly 13,000.
COVID-19 was listed as the official cause of a little more than 11,000 of those deaths.
Metzger said that these 2020 statistics are "frightening."
Metzger said Michigan's birth rate has been declining since the 1950s and the number of deaths is rising due to the aging population, along with COVID-19 continuing to intensify the problem. Metzger said this should be a concern to the powers that be.
According to 2020 Michigan Health Department numbers, the biggest population loss was in Macomb County but there were also losses in Wayne and Oakland counties.
