Busy weekend for Michigan State Police choppers: Aerial videos show officers arrest suspects who fled traffic stops

(WWJ) — It was a busy weekend for Michigan State Police aviation units across Metro Detroit.

After helping track down a missing 8-year-old boy on Friday, MSP helicopters helped local police track down suspects who fled from traffic stops.

MSP officials shared video of the incidents Monday afternoon, including a traffic stop on Detroit's west side around 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

Aerial footage shows the suspect crashing his car into an alley after apparently blowing a tire. The suspect then ran through a residential neighborhood.

The helicopter's thermal camera captured him hiding in bushes and the pilot is heard leading Detroit police officers right to his location.

Officials did not release any information about the suspect or why he was being pulled over.

In a separate incident, MSP Trooper 2 captured a chase that started in Eastpointe and ended in Warren after a driver failed to pull over for a traffic stop.

"It is always easier to stop for a traffic stop regardless of what you have going on in your life. There is too much technology available to think you wont get caught," MSP officials said on X, formerly Twitter.

The video shows a silver Kia crossing the median on Outer Drive and crashing into an open field just after midnight Sunday. Once in the field, the driver and two passengers bailed from the car and ran away.

One suspect surrendered in the street after being surrounded by police. The other two were eventually found hiding in an alley between two houses.

Authorities did not release any information about the suspects. No charging information for either incident has been released.
