A mother and daughter are dead after their car slammed into the Saginaw River, police said.
The vehicle went into the river from a parking lot at 2:19 p.m. Monday and emergency responders pulled both women, ages 81 and 52, from the water.
Janet and Nicholette Korpal from Bay County were transported to a local hospital, but both later died.
Circumstances of the crash, including what could have caused the descent into the water, are being investigated.
Multiple agencies responded to the scene and lent assistance, including the Bay County Sheriff's Office, U.S. Coast Guard, Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Michigan State Police, Essexville Department of Public Safety, Medstar Ambulance Service, and the Bangor Township Fire Department.
