MONROE COUNTY (WWJ) - A Macomb County man has died after a motorcycle crash that left a stretch of I-75 in Monroe County closed for several hours during morning rush hour traffic on Wednesday.
The northbound lanes of the freeway were closed from about 3:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. as the sheriff’s office investigated the crash, which happened just north of Otter Creek Road in LaSalle Township.
James Delikta of Mount Clremens was riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle in a construction zone when he rear-ended a Ford Escape, according to the sheriff’s office.
The impact of the crash caused Delikta, 46, to fall off the bike and he was then hit by a Ford Focus, officials said.
Delikta was pronounced dead at the scene. He was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
The sheriff’s office believes speed was a factor in the crash.
The drivers of both Fords – both men from Toledo – were wearing their seat belts at the time and were not injured in the crash. Both brought their cars to a stop on the freeway shoulder.
The crash is still under investigation and authorities are asking anyone who knows something about it to call 734-240-7541. Anonymous tips can also be called in to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
WWJ Traffic reporter KT said Wednesday morning it was "a slow go" for drivers trying to make their way through the area, as what is typically a 25-minute ride from Monroe to I-275 took drivers just about an hour to make.
