SOUTHFIELD (WWJ) - Three people were taken to the hospital with serious and critical injuries after a suspected drunk driver crashed into the back of a vehicle along M-10, state police confirmed Friday evening.
The Lodge Freeway was closed for several hours as police conducted an investigation into the crash, which occurred around 2:25 p.m. near Civic Center Drive.
Michigan State Police said police were dispatched to the area where a car was reported to be on fire after it struck an abandoned vehicle parked shoulder -- it was reported people may be stuck inside.
A silver Saab with massive front end damage was found by troopers blocking lanes of traffic on M-10, along with a grey Chevrolet Traverse with damage to its rear.
Police said the 25-year-old driver of the Saab was almost ejected through the windshield due to the impact of the crash and sustained facial structure injuries.

Another female occupant sustained serious injuries and was taken to Royal Oak Beaumont.
A preliminary investigation into the afternoon crash revealed the driver of the Saab had been speeding, police said, adding that alcohol was also a factor when the car slammed into the back of the Chevy which was abandoned off the shoulder of M-10.
The northbound lanes of M-10 were shut down with traffic rerouted to Southfield Rd as police conducted their investigation for over four hours. As of 6 p.m., the Lodge Freeway was once again open to drivers.
