DETROIT (WWJ) – An investigation is underway after a wild scene unfolded on a Detroit freeway ramp, ending with the initial suspect fleeing in a stolen Jeep and another person in custody for interfering.
It all happened around noon Thursday when a Michigan State Police trooper conducted a traffic stop on a Ford F-150 that was speeding, tailgating and driving carelessly on eastbound I-94 near Livernois.
The driver of the truck pulled over on the shoulder and when the trooper spoke with him, they discovered he only had a Michigan ID Card, was wanted on a warrant for shoplifting and had a suspended driver's license.
While authorities were working to confirm all that information, a maroon Jeep Cherokee pulled up and stopped in front of the F-150.
When the trooper tried to arrest the pickup driver, the suspect pushed and pulled away and ended up running. The trooper chased the driver on foot across the exit ramp and onto the embankment, where the driver fell.
The trooper was again trying to arrest the pickup driver when a man from the Jeep interfered by pushing the trooper away.
That gave the driver of the pickup time to run away again, running east on the right shoulder of I-94 when the trooper deployed his taser to stop the suspect.
While the taser took effect and the F-150 driver fell onto the embankment, the driver of the Jeep again "approached aggressively" and began to yell, MSP officials said. The trooper backed up, trying to figure out what was going on.
Meanwhile, the The F-150 driver was able to get up again and jumped in the driver's Jeep Grand Cherokee, before driving off.
MSP officials said the trooper was able to get the plate before the suspect fled.
The second suspect who interfered tried to run away but was arrested.
That suspect complained of medical issues after his arrest and was taken to Henry Ford Hospital.
That suspect claimed the Jeep he had been driving was stolen by the F-150 driver and the female inside of the Jeep was kidnapped. But MSP officials said he had no explanation why he was running away from the police after his vehicle was stolen.
Authorities are still investigating the incident, while the driver of the Jeep was going to be held in custody.
