GAYLORD (WWJ) – A Northern Michigan man is facing charges for allegedly embezzling money from his elderly mother to cover gambling debt.

Karl Joseph David, of Gaylord, had power of attorney for his elderly mother and was taking advantage of her, according to Michigan State Police.

MSP officials say they were contacted back in February by Adult Protective Services, regarding a tip about the medical and financial activities of a vulnerable adult. Their investigation led them to the 64-year-old David.

David had allegedly been embezzling money from her and writing bad checks.

MSP officials say David was using the money to cover gambling debt, but did not say how much debt he had.

After authorities seized bank records and conducted interviews, the Otsego County Prosecutor’s Office authorized an arrest warrant on June 30.

David turned himself in last Thursday, July 7.

He was arraigned in 87-A District Court on one count of embezzlement from a vulnerable adult over $1,000 but less than $20. He was also charged with three counts of non-sufficient funds check over $500.

David was given a $10,000 personal recognizance bond.
