Multiple MSP patrol cars in U.P. struck with rifle rounds & lit on fire, 'armed & dangerous' suspect remains at large

An armed and dangerous suspect is on the loose in the Upper Peninsula after a number of Michigan State Police patrol cars were targeted by gunfire and engulfed in flames early Wednesday morning.

SAULT STE. MARIE (WWJ) - An armed and dangerous suspect is on the loose in the Upper Peninsula after a number of Michigan State Police patrol cars were targeted by gunfire and engulfed in flames early Wednesday morning.

Troopers with MSP's Eighth District located off I-75 Business Spur in Sault Ste. Marie, the second-most populated city in the Upper Peninsula, said multiple patrol vehicles were lit on fire and then shot at with rife rounds at around 3:30 a.m. on Sept. 6.


No troopers were inside the vehicles at the time of the attack. No injuries were reported.

A suspect, identified as a white male wearing camouflage, remains at large at this time.

According to MSP, the man was last seen driving a silver Honda CRV heading southbound on I-75 Business Loop. He is considered armed and dangerous.

"We are asking the public and media to stay clear of the Sault Post and other MSP worksites at this time," troopers said in a social media update about the incident. "The Sault Ste. Marie Post will remain closed today. All other MSP Posts will remain open with regular lobby hours. We ask everyone to remain vigilant. If you see something, say something."

An investigation is underway. No other details were released.
