CLINTON TOWNSHIP (WWJ) - Authorities are warning people to stay away from the location where the explosions in Clinton Township took place.
Investigators from the Clinton Township Fire Department, ATF and EPA have been unable to enter the physical location of Monday’s explosions due to hotspots that continue to burn. Authorities said there are fewer than earlier in the week, but smoke can still be seen from the area.
There is also concern over unexploded butane and nitrous oxide canisters.
The physical search will begin on Monday at the earliest, officials said.
Clinton Township Supervisor Bob Cannon spoke to WWJ’s Jon Hewett and said he was angry and disappointed that the materials were in the building to begin with.
Cannon said the investigation will uncover what happened to begin the fire and explosions and who is responsible. He also said that someone will be held accountable for the incident.
There are also warnings to people that have been witnessed entering the location.
“The site is not safe,” Cannon said. “We have people that are going out there and picking up materials as Mr. Brouwer mentioned. Scrappers, we don’t want you. Nothing good can come from that other than a few pennies you’re going to get at the scrap yard. Please stay away. All the debris that’s out there is extremely dangerous.”
Clinton Township resident Turner Salter, 19, was killed by flying debris. His funeral was held Friday morning.
