(WWJ) - As Winter Storm Landon begins to dump snow across the state, transportation services from Detroit to Grand Rapids announced a slew of travel delays and cancellations which will impact airline, bus and train customers.
Dozens of flights in and out of Metro-Airport have been canceled this morning as 10 to 12 inches of snow is expected to accumulate in the metropolitan area between Wednesday and Thursday. Inbound flights from Bay City, Kalamazoo and Lansing were affected, as well as flights arriving from other areas in the Midwest, such as Ohio and New York.
In addition, over four dozen flights were cancelled going to those cities.
Train service provider, Amtrak, released service modifications amid safety concerns for customers and employees as Winter Storm Landon started it's hit on the Midwest. The winter storm caused officials to make temporary adjustments to travel schedules from Feb. 2 to Feb. 3.
Wolverine trains 354 and 355 with service between Pontiac and Chicago were both cancelled this morning. Six additional trains scheduled to run the same route on Thursday have also suspended services while the Pere Marquette train out of Grand Rapids and the Blue Water Train out of Port Huron -- both with service to Chicago -- cancelled their routes due to Winter Storm Landon.
The company said customers who are impacted by the service modifications will be accommodated on another train with a departure time similar to their original trip or service may be pushed to another day. Amtrak will not charge customers extra fees if they wish to change their travel arrangements if they are affected by the modified schedule.
Officials have urged all customers to be prepared and check on service information prior to arrival, especially as Winter Storm Landon intensifies across the region this afternoon. The most current travel status is available at Amtrak.com and on Twitter.
Officials at SMART Bus said while the company is working hard to ensure buses remain operating and on schedule, riders should be prepared for delays as heavy snow sets in later today.
"SMART has taken many steps to make sure we can continue to serve the local communities, especially during challenging times, and a snowstorm is one of those times," said Dwight Ferrell, General Manage of SMART.
"Make sure we have operators and essential staff available, rested is important to operating service throughout the storm."
Ferrell wanted to remind riders to dress warmly and to stand in a safe spot while waiting on buses. If a bus stop is inaccessible, officials ask riders to stand off to the side on the nearest driveway or sidewalk and remember that buses may need to be flagged down as they approach.
Riders can also check with customer service for current travel information at smartbus.org or by phone at 866-962-5515.
A tweet from Detriot's streetcar service, QLINE, informed customers they may experience travel delays today due to a vehicle accident involving one of their railcars. At this time, it is unsure if the weather had an impact and no other details were released.
