(WWJ) A suspect, armed with an assault rifle during a robbery at 7-Eleven, was left in critical condition in an officer-involved shooting with Ferndale Police.

"The armed suspect did not comply with officer's commands and attempted to evade them," a Ferndale Police Department press release read. "Officers fired shots striking the suspect."

Officers "provided lifesaving measures" and rushed him to a local hospital, where he's in critical condition.

No officers were injured, according to Ferndale Police.

The shooting followed shortly after the armed robbery at a 7-Eleven near 9 Mile and Livernois in Ferndale around 5:50 p.m. Thursday. Police said the suspect, wearing body armor and a mask, walked into the store with an assault rifle and demanded money. He fired a round into the store and took "a large amount of cash," according to police.

No one was injured during the robbery.

Ferndale Police told WWJ they also learned the same suspect was wanted by Detroit Police for a carjacking and shooting near 7 Mile and Wyoming 25 minutes before the robbery occurred.

The suspect has not been publicly identified.

The Oakland County Sheriff's Office Special Investigation Unit is investigating the officer-involved shooting.

Ferndale Police Chief Dennis Emmi released the following statement:

"The incident that occurred today is an example of the difficult reality of policing and a scenario that no officer ever wants to encounter. I can assure you that they are trained to treat these decisions critically
and with the utmost gravity.

While we all want quick information and answers, the best thing we can do right now is allow the details of this case to be studied and investigated—fully, impartially, and with great care. I have turned this case over to the Oakland County Sheriff's Office for a full investigation.

We are committed to a thorough and meticulous investigative process and transparent sharing of information, and we appreciate your understanding as all agencies involved take the time necessary to do this the right way. As always, we remain here to serve our community with integrity, compassion, and service."
